I work as an endocrinologist treating hormonal disorders such as hyper- and hypothyroidism. What dietary changes can I make to support better thyroid health is one of the most often inquiries I get. Fortunately, adding a couple of essential minerals and elements to your diet could be beneficial.

The only organ in our body that makes thyroid hormone, which is essential to keeping every other organ in our body operating normally from our heart beating to our bowel movements is the thyroid gland.

The mineral iodine is the building block of thyroid hormone. Thyroid conditions could be more prevalent in regions of the world with iodine shortages. African, Southeast Asian, and Western Pacific regions are more prone to have iodine shortages.

Fortunately, the U.S. diet and water supply often include adequate iodine to support thyroid hormone synthesis. However, the times when iodine supplementation is most typically required are during pregnancy and lactation.

What is hypothyroidism, and how do symptoms appear?

1. Combine Brazil nuts and selenium.

Classical sources of selenium are Brazil nuts. Selenium is also abundant in other food sources, though, such as:

  • Dark chocolate.
  • Certain spices and herbs include saffron, oregano, and cloves.
  • Nuts as in pecans and walnuts.
 
For all of my thyroid patients, I advise eating at least one cup of berries (in any combination) every day to help avoid cell and crucial organ damage.


4. Consume oysters for zinc.

Thyroid hormone is formed and broken down in part with zinc. Oysters, fortified cereals, beef, turkey, pig, and lentils are all high in zinc.


I advise my thyroid disease patients to include ten milligrams of zinc in their daily diet, and if they are pregnant or nursing, even more. A mere three ounces of oysters have about thirty milligrams of zinc, but other everyday foods have far less. Just over three milligrams are found in oats, pumpkin seeds, and breakfast cereals. 


What foods are unhealthy for thyroid health?

Most importantly, if you have hypothyroidism, you could wish to attempt to stay away from processed meals.

Specific thyroid disorders linked to inflammation, such as Hashimoto's thyroiditis, the primary cause of hypothyroidism, may become worsened by the chemicals in some processed foods.

Among these substances could be MSG, artificial flavorings, artificial food colors and colorings, and preservatives. See nutrition labels to stay away from these foods.
